How to Create an Awesome 5-Star Rating System in Google Sheets

If you’re like me, you’ve probably been struggling to find the perfect way to represent product ratings in Google Sheets. You know, those pesky numbers like 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 3.5, 4.5, and so on. Well, fret no more! I’m here to spill the beans on how you can create an in-cell 5-star rating system in Google Sheets that will make your data shine.

Two Methods for Creating a 5-Star Rating System in Sheets

There are two methods you can use to create a 5-star rating system in Google Sheets. Let’s explore them one by one.

Star Rating with In-Cell Images (Handles Half Stars)

If you want to include half stars in your rating system, this is the method for you. It involves using in-cell images to represent the stars. It’s the only way to achieve that beautiful 4.5-star rating you’ve been dreaming of.

To get started, you’ll need three star images: a black star, a white star, and a half-filled star. Now, I know what you’re thinking. Where can I find these images? Well, fear not! You can find them on my website Crawlan.com along with a step-by-step guide on how to create the 5-star rating chart in Google Sheets.

Star Rating with REPT + CHAR Formula Method (No Half Stars)

If half stars aren’t your cup of tea, don’t worry. There’s another method you can use to create a star rating table in Google Sheets. This method involves using the REPT function in combination with the CHAR function to repeat star symbols.

Here’s an example formula to get you started:

=REPT(CHAR(9733), 2)

This formula will repeat the black star symbol twice. If you want to display a white star, simply change the number in the formula to 9734. Keep in mind that this method doesn’t allow for half-star ratings, as there is no representation of a half-filled star in the current Unicode table. But hey, sometimes simplicity is key!

Step-by-Step Guide to Creating an Image-Based 5-Star Rating in Sheets

Now that you know the two methods, let’s dive deeper into the first method using in-cell images. I’ve created a sample sheet with all the necessary star images and a 5-star rating formula just for you. You can find it on my website Crawlan.com.

Once you have access to the star images, you’ll need to copy them to your own sheet. Don’t worry, I’ll guide you through the process. Simply right-click on the tab named “Star_Image” in the sample sheet and select “Copy to > Existing spreadsheet”. Choose the file where you want to create your rating chart and click “Insert”. It’s that easy!

If you prefer, you can also create your own star image using the Photoshop Polygon tool. There are plenty of tutorials available online to help you with that. But why go through all that trouble when I’ve already provided you with the necessary images, right?

Now that you have the star images in your sheet, it’s time to prepare your data for rating and weighted average calculations. Don’t worry, I’ve got you covered there too. I’ve included a sample data set in the sample sheet to show you how it’s done. You can refer to it for guidance.

Once your data is ready, you can use the formula I’ve provided to create an in-cell 5-star rating system in Google Sheets. Simply enter the formula in the desired cell, and it will automatically expand to the rest of the rows and columns. It’s that simple!

That’s it! You’re now armed with the knowledge and tools to create an awesome 5-star rating system in Google Sheets. So go ahead, give it a try, and let your data shine like never before.
