Automatically Adjusting a Single Column

The easiest method to automatically adjust a single column is by using the double-click method, as shown below.

  1. Place your mouse cursor on the right side of the column letter.

At the top of the screen, move your mouse cursor towards the edge of the column letter. Notice that the cursor transforms into the ↔ symbol.

In our example, we need to adjust the width of column D, which means we should place the mouse cursor at the end of the letter D, just before the letter E.

  2. Double-click to automatically adjust.

With the mouse cursor displaying the ↔ symbol, double-click the left mouse button. The column width will be adjusted.

  3. Your column has now been adjusted.

The column width has now been adjusted to fit the longest value contained within the column.

In our example, column D has expanded to accommodate the longest value.

Automatically Adjusting Multiple Columns

You can also automatically adjust multiple columns at once.

  1. Select the columns to be adjusted automatically.

Click on the column letters to select them. If the cells are adjacent, you can click and drag to select them all. If the columns to be adjusted are separate, hold down the Ctrl (Cmd ⌘ on Mac) key and click on the individual column letters.

In our example, we will select columns C and E because the values in each column are longer than the column width.

  2. Place your mouse cursor to the right of any selected column.

Move your mouse cursor towards the right edge of the highlighted column letter. The cursor will transform into the ↔ symbol.

In our example, we will move the cursor to the edge of column E.

  3. Double-click the column edge to automatically adjust.

With the cursor displaying the double arrow ↔ symbol, double-click the left mouse button. The columns will automatically adjust.

  4. Your columns have now been adjusted.

The column widths are now automatically adjusted to fit the longest value.

As we can see in our example, columns C and E now display each value, including the longest entries.
