In this article, I’m going to share with you a powerful formula in Google Sheets called AVERAGE. With this formula, you’ll be able to easily find the average of a list of numbers, making your calculations a breeze.

Finding the Average with AVERAGE Formula

The AVERAGE formula is incredibly useful, especially when you have a long list of numbers that you need to calculate the average for. The average, also known as the mean, is calculated by dividing the sum of all the values in the set by the total number of values.

To use the AVERAGE formula in Google Sheets, follow these simple steps:

  1. Start by typing “=AVERAGE(” or go to “Insert” in the menu bar ➝ “Function” ➝ “Statistics” ➝ “AVERAGE”.
  2. Select the range of data for which you want to find the average. You can include non-adjacent ranges by separating them with commas.
  3. Press Enter.

The generic formula structure is as follows:

Suppose you have been reviewing the ratings given by five customers for four different types of products:

(i) Average per Product:
Calculating the average per product is simple. You can just select a portion of the column for each product. For example, the AVERAGE formula in cell C10 (for product A) contains the range C4:C8, which includes the numbers 10, 8, 6, 4, and 2. The calculated result is 6.

(ii) Average between Product A and C:
This example can be a bit tricky. As mentioned earlier, if you want to select non-adjacent ranges as a data set, you can use a comma to separate them. Select a portion of the column for product A (C4:C8), add a comma, and select a portion of the column for product C (E4:E8). The total value in the specified range is 70 (10+8+6+4+2+6+7+8+9+10), and the number of values in the chosen range is 10. The result, therefore, is 7, obtained by dividing 70 by 10.

(iii) Average for All Products:
As you can see in the screenshot, you can select an array as a data set that includes twenty numbers for all the products. The total value in the range is 110, and the average is 5.5, obtained by dividing 110 by 20.

How to Find the Average of Multiple Cells in Google Sheets

To find the average of multiple cells in Google Sheets, you can use the built-in AVERAGE function. As mentioned earlier, you can incorporate a range of cells or multiple non-adjacent cell ranges by separating them with commas in the formula.
