How to Add a Caption to a Chart in Google Sheets

Do you want to make your Google Sheets charts more informative and visually appealing? Adding a caption to your chart can help users better understand the information it conveys. In this tutorial, we will guide you through the process of adding and formatting a caption for your Google Sheets chart.

Step 1: Double-click on an empty area of the chart

To begin, simply double-click on an empty area of your chart. Make sure you click on an empty area of the chart itself. The border around the entire chart will be highlighted, and the chart editing panel will appear on the right side of the page.

Alternative method: If you prefer, you can also access the chart editing panel by right-clicking on an empty area of the chart, and selecting the “Chart Editor” option from the context menu. This will open the chart editing panel.

The chart editing panel is where you can make changes to the chart title and other elements.

Step 2: Select the Customize tab

After selecting your chart, the chart editing panel will appear on the right side of the page. Click on the “Customize” tab, and the options for modifying the chart style will be displayed.

Step 3: Open the Legend submenu

In the “Customize” tab, click on the “Legend” submenu, and you will see the available options for the legend based on the chart type you have selected.

Step 4: Select the caption position from the Position dropdown menu

Next, choose the desired location for the caption from the “Position” dropdown menu. There are several options available for positioning the caption in your chart.

Result: The chart will be updated with a caption

After selecting the caption position, the chart will be automatically updated with the caption in the chosen location.

Step 5: How to format the chart caption

You can customize the formatting of the chart caption using the options listed in the “Chart and Axis Titles” submenu. Here are some formatting options you can apply to the chart caption:

  • Font style
  • Font size
  • Font formatting (bold, italic)
  • Text color
