Welcome to Bolamarketing.com! In this article, we’re going to show you how to convert currencies in Google Sheets with just a few clicks. It’s time to master this powerful feature and make your financial calculations a breeze.

How to Convert Currencies in Google Sheets

1. Select an Empty Cell in Your Spreadsheet

To begin, click on an empty cell in your Google Sheets document. This is where the conversion will appear. Let’s say we choose cell A6 as an example.

Google Sheets

2. Enter the Formula =GOOGLEFINANCE(“CURRENCY:<Currency Code 1><Currency Code 2>”)

In the selected cell, enter the formula: =GOOGLEFINANCE("CURRENCY:<Currency Code 1><Currency Code 2>"). Let’s break down the formula for better understanding:

  • =GOOGLEFINANCE: This function retrieves current and historical monetary information from Google Finance.
  • CURRENCY: Specifies that the following data is currency-related.
  • <Currency Code 1>: The currency code you want to convert from.
  • <Currency Code 2>: The currency code you want to convert to. Make sure to enter these codes without any spaces.

Here are the codes for some popular currencies:

  • US Dollar = USD
  • Canadian Dollar = CAD
  • British Pound Sterling = GBP
  • Euro = EUR
  • Hong Kong Dollar = HKD
  • Japanese Yen = JPY

For our example, let’s compare the US Dollar (USD) to the British Pound Sterling (GBP). Our formula will be:
=GOOGLEFINANCE("CURRENCY:USDGBP")

3. Press Enter to See the Results

Once you’ve entered the formula, simply press Enter. The formula will be executed, and the currency conversion will appear. In our example, the conversion rate from US Dollar (USD) to British Pound Sterling (GBP) is 0.83277 USD to GBP.

If you want to convert a specific amount, click on a new cell. For instance, in our example, we clicked on cell B6 and entered the same formula with the addition of *Value at the end, after the closing parenthesis ). Let’s use 100 as an example value. Therefore, our formula for this demonstration will be:
=GOOGLEFINANCE("CURRENCY:USDGBP")*100

You can preview the exact calculation result for converting the value of $100 to GBP in the image below.

How to Convert Currencies in Google Sheets Using Cell References

Did you know you can also convert currencies using currency codes located in other cells? In the following demonstration, we’ll show you how to use cell references in the GOOGLEFINANCE formula.

1. Select an Empty Cell

Start by selecting an empty cell where you want the results to appear. Let’s say we select cell C5 as an example.

2. Enter the Formula =GOOGLEFINANCE(“CURRENCY:”&<Cell Ref 1>&<Cell Ref 2>)

In the selected cell, enter the formula: =GOOGLEFINANCE("CURRENCY:"&<Cell Ref 1>&<Cell Ref 2>). Let’s break down the formula:

  • =GOOGLEFINANCE: This function retrieves current and historical monetary information from Google Finance.
  • CURRENCY: Specifies that the following data is currency-related.
  • <Cell Ref 1>: The reference to the cell that contains the currency code you want to convert from. In our example, it’s A5, which contains the currency code for US Dollar (USD).
  • <Cell Ref 2>: The reference to the cell that contains the currency code you want to convert to. In our example, it’s B5, which contains the currency code for British Pound Sterling (GBP).

In our example, we’ll enter the formula in cell C5. Since we’re comparing the currency code for US Dollar (USD) from cell A5 to British Pound Sterling (GBP) from cell B5, our formula will be:
=GOOGLEFINANCE("CURRENCY:"&A5&B5)

3. Press Enter to See the Results

Once you’ve entered the formula, press Enter to see the results. The formula will be executed, and the conversion rate will be displayed. In our example, we compared the unit values of USD (cell A5) and GBP (cell B5), and the returned result is the conversion rate of 0.083239. Please note that this rate might change over time as the spreadsheet is opened or modified.

You can also convert a specific numeric amount based on the cell reference values. Click on a new cell first. In our example, we clicked on cell C6 and entered the same formula with *Value added at the end, after the closing parenthesis ). For this example, let’s use the value 100. The complete formula for this demonstration will be:
=GOOGLEFINANCE("CURRENCY:"&A5&B5)*100

This will return the exact corresponding value based on the currency parameters from cells A6 and B6 in the formula, as shown in our example image. We can see that 100 GBP to EUR is equivalent to 113.599.
