How to Create an Organizational Chart in Google Sheets

Impress Your Colleagues with Your Organizational Chart Skills!

Have you ever wanted to create an organizational chart to visually represent a hierarchical structure or workflow in your company? Look no further! In this article, I will show you how to easily and quickly create an organizational chart in Google Sheets.

Step 1: Open a Blank Spreadsheet

First, open a blank spreadsheet in Google Sheets. Unfortunately, Google Sheets does not provide built-in templates for organizational charts, but don’t worry, we have a solution.

Step 2: Open the Google Drawing Window

Go to the “Insert” tab and click on “Drawing” to open the Google Drawing window.

Step 3: Draw Your Organizational Chart

In the Drawing window, use the shape icons to add organizational chart shapes and the line or arrow icons to connect them. Once your diagram is complete, click on the “Save and Close” button. Your organizational chart will then be added to the spreadsheet.

However, the shape icons in Google Sheets are not specifically designed for organizational charts, so your chart may not look uniform.

Step 4: Share Your Organizational Chart

To share your organizational chart, go to the “File” tab, click on “Share” in the dropdown menu, or click on the “Share” button in the top right corner of the interface.

Enter the document name and input the names or email addresses of the people you want to share the organizational chart with. You can also modify the permissions to allow people to edit, comment, or simply view the chart.

Prefer Using EdrawMax?

Using Google Drawings to create a basic organizational chart requires starting from scratch. However, if you want to save time and create a more complex organizational chart, I recommend using EdrawMax.

Step 1: Find an Organizational Chart Template

In EdrawMax, click on “Organizational Chart” in the list of diagram types to find various organizational chart templates. You can also find organizational chart templates on the Edraw template website and download them to your computer.

Step 2: Create an Organizational Chart with a Free Template

To create an organizational chart with a template in EdrawMax, click on the template thumbnail in the gallery or click on the “Import” button in the left panel and import the saved template into the web application.

Now, the organizational chart template will be displayed on the main interface. You can also create a blank organizational chart by clicking on the “plus” thumbnail in the template gallery. EdrawMax will then provide you with a blank drawing page where you can manually draw your organizational chart.

Next, you can click on the symbol library icon, open the “Library” dialog box, and choose the desired shapes and symbols, not just specific to organizational charts. The selected shapes and symbols will then appear in the “Library” panel.

You can drag these shapes and symbols onto the drawing page, click on the “Connector” button in the toolbar to add connection lines between organizational chart shapes. In EdrawMax, all shapes and lines are designed to help you create diagrams optimally with “smart guides” and “connection points” that keep shapes aligned and lines automatically connected.

Step 3: Customize Your Organizational Chart

To change the color or style of the fill, lines, or shadow, first, select the shape, then click on the “Style” icon in the right sidebar to open the “Fill/Line/Shadow” panel.

To change the theme of the entire organizational chart diagram, click on the “Theme” icon in the right sidebar to open the “Theme” panel and select your preferred theme, color, connector style, or font style.

Step 4: Share Your Organizational Chart

To share your organizational chart created in EdrawMax, click on the “Share” button in the top right corner of the main interface or go to the “File” tab and click on “Share” in the dropdown menu.
