I stumbled upon a game-changing trick that will forever transform your experience with Google Sheets. This quick and easy tip will save you time and spare you from the frustrations that often come with working on spreadsheets.

Freezing the Header Row in Google Sheets

Why Freeze the Header Row?

I constantly have a million things on my mind. So, it’s no surprise that all it takes is a little scrolling down on a spreadsheet for me to forget where and what I’m supposed to enter. The same goes for scrolling too far to the right! I waste so much time scrolling back just to double-check if I’m inputting data in the correct student’s row.

Freezing the header row and the columns containing student names or numbers has allowed me to reclaim those precious seconds I used to spend “double-checking.” This tip keeps all vital information visible while you effortlessly navigate through the data entry area. Now, no matter where I am on the spreadsheet, I can always see the student’s name and the header. These seconds have turned into minutes, and even hours, of saved time.

How to Freeze the Header Row (and more) in Google Sheets?

Step-by-Step Guide to Freezing the Header Row and Columns

1. Create your column labels.

2. Determine the row or column you want to freeze. If it’s more than 2 rows, select the row.

3. Click on “View” in the header column, then select “Freeze.”

4. Choose the number of rows or columns you want to freeze, or click on “Up to current row” if you want more than two frozen rows.

Personally, I like to freeze both the header row at the top and a title row below it. On the side, I freeze the first 2 or 3 columns containing student names and numbers.

Tips for Freezing the Header Row:

If you find that the student names take up too much space, simply adjust the font size or freeze only the last names and numbers.

Reclaim those precious seconds!
