Have you ever struggled with fitting text in a cell in Google Sheets? While it’s usually easy to enter data, it can sometimes be difficult to read that data once it’s entered. Luckily, Google Sheets offers several features to help analyze and clarify numbers, but what about simple text that doesn’t fit in a cell and doesn’t display correctly? Fret not, because in this tutorial, I’m going to share some tricks to perfectly fit your text in a cell. So let’s dive in!

Method: Text Line Break

If your text doesn’t fit in the cell because it overflows, the best solution is often to make the text wrap to a new line.

Step 1

Select the cell where you want to modify the text line break, then click on the “Text Wrap” icon in the toolbar and select the “Wrap” option.

Step 2

The text will now be distributed across as many lines as necessary to fit within the current column width. Unless you’ve manually set the row height, it will adjust automatically to display all the text in the cell.

Method: Cell Resizing

Sometimes, the size of the cell itself is the reason why the text doesn’t fit. This can happen if the column width is too narrow or if the row height has been manually set and doesn’t update automatically based on its content.

Here’s how to resize the cell:

Step 1

To adjust the column width, click on the left boundary between the column you want to resize and the next one. The cursor will transform into a two-ended resize arrow, and a vertical blue line will appear.

Step 2

Drag to resize the column.

Step 3

If the cell is too short, its height can be set similarly to the column width. Simply click on the lower boundary of the row number and drag to resize.

Step 4

The text should now fit in the cell perfectly.

Method: Cell Merging

The last method should be used when the text line break doesn’t achieve the desired effect on its own and cell resizing disrupts other parts of the spreadsheet. Here’s how to merge cells to fit the text:

Step 1

Select the cell you want to merge and a series of cells next to it. You can select cells to the right, below, or both. Note that only the data in the top-left cell will be preserved after merging.

Step 2

Click on the “Merge Cells” button in the toolbar.

Step 3

The cells will merge, and if enough cells were selected, the text will display correctly in the new merged cell. Note that this method can be combined with the text line break method, as shown in the screenshot below.
