FAQ

Q: Can I use this method to merge two non-adjacent rows?

A: No, the rows must be adjacent to each other.

Q: Can I merge three or more rows using this method?

A: Yes, just make sure they are adjacent to each other.

Q: Can I use this method to merge rows with data as well?

A: No, this method only retains the data from the first row. If you want to combine the data, check out our article on merging cells and preserving data in Google Sheets.

Q: How can I merge both rows and data?

Here are the steps:

  1. Identify the rows you want to merge.

  2. Use the formula =CONCAT(cell1,cell2). The CONCAT function can be used to combine data from two cells in different rows but along the same column. Its syntax is =CONCAT(cell1,cell2). If you want to combine three or more, use the CONCATENATE function: =CONCATENATE(cell1,cell2,cell3,...). For our example, we want to combine the data from row 1 and row 2 along the same column using the CONCAT function. The resulting formula for column A is =CONCAT(A1,A2). The same pattern is followed for other columns covered by the two rows.

  3. Copy the cell containing the formula and paste it as values. We need to do this to preserve the result of the CONCAT formula when we merge them in the next step. Select the row containing the formula, copy it using the keyboard shortcut (Ctrl+C on Windows or ⌘+C on Mac), select Paste special, then select Values only.

  4. Merge the rows vertically. Select the two rows to merge, go to the Format menu, click on Merge cells, then select Merge vertically. A pop-up box will appear to remind you that only the value in the top-left will be retained. Click on OK.

  1. Copy the cell containing the value and paste it as values into the merged cells. You can use the following keyboard shortcuts for this: Copy: Ctrl+C (Windows); ⌘+C (Mac) Paste: Ctrl+V (Windows); ⌘+V (Mac) You need to do this for each cell, or else Google Sheets will separate the merged rows back into individual rows.
