Remove Hyperlinks in Google Sheets

Hyperlinks are incredibly useful in Google Sheets when working with data from web pages or when linking to files and folders that you can simply click to access. However, sometimes they can be quite annoying.

In my line of work, I often need to copy and paste data from the web into a Google spreadsheet and work with that data. If the original data contains hyperlinks, those hyperlinks will also carry over into the formatting of Google Sheets. And because I don’t want those hyperlinks, the first thing I do is remove them from the cells in Google Sheets.

In this tutorial, I’ll show you a few methods to quickly remove hyperlinks in Google Sheets.

Method 1: Remove Hyperlinks Using the Context Menu

This method is the simplest and quickest way to remove hyperlinks in Google Sheets.

  1. Select the range containing the hyperlinks.
  2. Right-click on one of the selected cells.
  3. Go to Cell actions > Remove link.

These steps will remove the hyperlinks from all the selected cells.

Method 2: Remove All Hyperlinks at Once

If you want to remove all the hyperlinks from your entire spreadsheet in one go, you can use this method:

  1. Select the entire spreadsheet using CTRL + A or by clicking on the box in the top-left corner, below the formula bar.
  2. Right-click anywhere in the spreadsheet.
  3. Go to Cell actions > Remove link.

Method 3: Remove Hyperlinks Using “Paste Special”

In most cases, when you copy data from a web page, you only need the text and not the accompanying formatting and links.

The quickest way to achieve this is by simply copying the cell content and pasting it as a value elsewhere in the spreadsheet.

Let’s say you have a set of data as shown below and you want to get the text without the hyperlinks:

  1. Select the cells containing the hyperlinks.
  2. Copy those cells (you can use the keyboard shortcut Ctrl + C on Windows or Command + C on Mac), or right-click on the selection and click Copy.
  3. Right-click on the cell where you want to paste this data (in this example, I’ll use cell B2).
  4. Hover over the “Paste special” option.
  5. Click on “Paste values only”.

These steps will copy the data and paste only the values, removing all the formatting and hyperlinks.

Now you can either paste this data in place of the data containing hyperlinks or delete the original data and use this data going forward.

Conclusion

Those are just a few of the methods you can use to quickly remove hyperlinks from cells in Google Sheets.
