Importing Data from One Google Sheet to Another: The Ultimate Guide

Video google sheets importing data from another sheet

If you’re an avid user of Google Sheets, chances are you often find yourself needing to reference or import data from one sheet to another. While it may seem like a daunting task, fear not! We have you covered with multiple methods to make this process a breeze.

Method 1: Importing data from another sheet within the same document

If the data you want to import is within the same Google Sheets document and comes from a single cell, you can use the simple formula =[SheetName!CellName] in the destination cell.

This method works well for simple imports and calculations. It also establishes a link between the two cells, so any changes made in the original cell will automatically be reflected in the destination cell. No more tedious copy-pasting!

But what if your data is in a different document or you want to transfer more than just one cell at a time? Read on!

Method 2: Importing data from a sheet in a different document

In some cases, you might keep your data in separate documents to perform calculations in one and generate reports in another. Or maybe you keep your client data separate but want to combine it for an internal report. Fear not, we have a solution for you!

You can use the =IMPORTRANGE formula:

  1. Open your destination sheet.
  2. Select an empty cell (note that your data will transfer to the top left corner).
  3. Make sure all cells covered by your data are empty, or you’ll encounter an error.
  4. Enter the formula =IMPORTRANGE("URLSheet", "SheetName!CellRange") in your top-left cell.
  5. Use the URL of the sheet you want to import data from. The sheet name and cell range are optional.
  6. Press “Enter.”
  7. Allow access to your sheet.
  8. Voila! Your data is now imported and linked. Whenever you update the original sheet, the destination sheet will also be updated.

But wait, there must be an even easier way, right?

Method 3: The simplest way to import data from one sheet to another

Whether you want to import data from a sheet within the same document or from a different document, follow these simple steps to import and connect your data to another sheet:

  1. Open your destination sheet.
  2. Select an empty cell (note that your data will transfer to the top left corner).
  3. Click on “Add-ons” ➡️ “Supermetrics” ➡️ “Launch sidebar.”
  4. Select your data source ↘️ scroll down to Google Sheets.
  5. Enter the URL of the sheet you want to import data from in the “Report configuration” field.
  6. Press “Get Data to Table.”
  7. And voila!

Pro tip: You can set up automatic refresh and email delivery for your imported data. Just click on the “Schedule” tab in the sidebar.

This method is particularly useful when sharing a report with an external partner or client. So, whenever you update your original sheet, they can receive an email with the updated data.

Looking for advanced settings to customize your imported data? We’ve got you covered. Simply enter the parameter name in the “Options” ➡️ “Advanced Settings” section of the sidebar.

  • ALLOW_SUM_UNIQUE disables the safeguards we have against summing up values of unique counting measures, such as unique users or page views.
  • COMBINE_DIMENSIONS concatenates the dimension values when multiple dimensions have been specified.
  • DATES_NOTE displays the date range of the query (and the comparison range if used) above the result table.
  • KEEP_RESULTS_ON_REFRESH_ERROR in case a query refresh returns an error, this parameter allows you to keep the results from a previous successful refresh.
  • STORE_ERROR_QUERY stores the query even if it returns an error.
  • TIME_DISP_START_DATE displays the first day of the month or week instead of the month/week number.
  • DISABLE_DIMENSION_AUTOFORMAT prevents Google Sheets from automatically formatting dimension values.
