Smileys and Icons: Adding Life to Google Sheets

Have you ever wanted to add a touch of personality to your Google Sheets? Well, look no further! In this article, I will show you how to insert smileys and icons based on values in Google Sheets. With just a few simple steps, you can bring your spreadsheets to life and make them more engaging than ever before.

The Two Methods

There are two methods to insert emoticons within cells in Google Sheets:

  1. Using the Image function, which requires image URLs.
  2. Using the built-in menu command “Insert Image in cell” feature.

For the purposes of this article, I will be focusing on the second method, as it doesn’t involve using image URLs.

Steps to Insert Smileys and Icons Based on Values

  1. Download an icon pack on your desktop. There are many sites that offer free and paid icon packs. If you can’t find one, don’t worry! I’ll guide you on how to get one.

  2. Open your Google Sheets file and go to the sheet where you want to insert the smileys and icons.

  3. Click on the cell where you want to insert the first smiley or icon. Then go to Insert > Image > Image in Cell.

  4. In the popup window, click on the Search tab and search for smileys. If you have smileys or icon packs already downloaded on your desktop, you can use the Upload button instead.

Smileys and icons search within Google Sheets

  1. Click on the smiley or icon that you want to insert. Repeat this step for other cells where you want to add smileys or icons. You can name the smileys or icons in the adjacent cells for easy reference.

And that’s it! You have successfully inserted smileys and icons based on values in Google Sheets. But how can you make them appear based on specific conditions? Let’s find out.

Conditional Smileys and Icons

To make the smileys and icons appear based on certain conditions, you can use the IF formula combined with the VLOOKUP function. Here’s how:

  1. In another sheet, prepare the sample data that you want to test. For example, you can have a column for sales volume.

  2. In the adjacent column, use the IF formula to determine the condition for each value. For example, if the sale volume is less than 5000, display “Unhappy”. If it is between 5000 and 7500, display “Happy”. If it is greater than or equal to 7500, display “Love”.

  3. Use the VLOOKUP function to match the values from the first sheet with the corresponding smileys or icons from the second sheet. The formula would look something like this:

VLOOKUP(search_keys [IF formula above], range to lookup [Sheet2 column A and B], output [Sheet2 column 2])

This formula will return the corresponding smileys or icons based on the conditions you set.

And there you have it! You can now dynamically display smileys and icons based on specific values in Google Sheets. It’s a fun and creative way to visualize your data and make it more engaging.
