Sorting people by their name or first name from A to Z is one of the most common and familiar ways of organizing for most people. So, if you’re doing something like a guest list or trying to track preferences for a gift exchange, you’ll probably want to sort names in that way.

Here’s how to alphabetically sort in Google Sheets on both computer and mobile.

How to Alphabetically Sort in Google Sheets on Computer

1. Open Google Sheets on your PC or Mac. Sign in and open the sheet you want to sort.

2. Click and drag your mouse to select the range of data you want to sort.

3. Click on the “Data” button in the top menu.

4. In the dropdown menu, click “Sort range”.

5. In the pop-up window, make sure to specify if your columns have headers or not. If they do, check the box at the top.

  • If you want to sort a complete data table with headers, make sure to freeze the first row. Then, at the top of your spreadsheet, click on the column letter you want to sort. Right-click on the letter, then click “Sort sheet A > Z”.

6. Select the column you want to sort alphabetically, then choose either A to Z or Z to A.

7. When you’re confident everything is correct, click “Sort”.

How to Alphabetically Sort in Google Sheets on Your Mobile Device

1. Open the Google Sheets app on your iPhone or Android device.

2. Select the spreadsheet you want to edit.

3. Tap the gray box in the top left corner of the spreadsheet to select the entire document.

4. Click on the three dots in the top right corner of your screen.

5. In the side menu, tap on “Create a filter”.

6. Tap on the green triangle next to the column you want to sort.

7. Under “Sort and filter”, tap on A > Z or Z > A.
